It is in the best interest of staff and the Library that staff be encouraged,
within reason, to attend Library and departmental Social Events in order to
strengthen ties between the RS Teams and other staff in the Libraries. Because
of our geography, these Social Events may be the only opportunity for staff
to interact with their coworkers in other Teams/Divisions. They are therefore
important in building staff cohesion, and are also important to staff morale.
In addition, each RS Team has different restrictions placed upon it due to the
nature of their work and their location in relation to campus. In an effort
to set broad, non-restrictive guidelines and allow each supervisor some discretion
in handling these concerns, the following policies will apply to RS staff:
(From Human Resources Policies and Procedures Staff Guide)
HR-030: University Sponsored Activities: Staff
are encouraged to attend University Sponsored
events. Hourly paid staff attending should gain supervisor approval. If approval
is provided by the supervisor, the time away from work that is a part of their
normal work day is paid.
Library Sponsored Activities are covered under this same policy.
Staff-Initiated Activities: (Brown-bag lunches, departmental parties, luncheons, socials, etc., and other non-official parties, such as the Halloween Party): These events are generally planned to take place around meal/break times. It is expected that the employee will count the time spent at the event as their normal meal/break time; any time over the employee's usual meal/break time and within their regularly scheduled hours may be considered release time* with the supervisor's prior approval.
(Release Time - paid time away from one's duties, during one's regularly scheduled hours, at the discretion of, and with the prior approval of, the employee's supervisor. )
Library's Annual Staff Event- as these do not generally take place during work hours, time spent at this Event is not paid.
