Baudelaire Cataloging

“The W.T. Bandy Center for Baudelaire Studies was founded in 1968 by the College of Arts and Sciences of Vanderbilt University as a joint project between the Department of French and Italian and the Jean and Alexander Heard Library. Its core was the personal collection of the eminent Baudelaire scholar, W.T. Bandy, who continued to work with the collection until his death in 1989. Claude Pichois, the distinguished French editor and biographer of Charles Baudelaire, served as director of the center from 1982 until his retirement in 1998. To reflect more accurately the growth in the holdings of the center, its name was changed in 1998 to The W.T. Bandy Center for Baudelaire and Modern French Studies”—from The W.T. Bandy Center website.

Items which are cataloged for the Baudelaire Collection are given special and unique care. Baudelaire items received in Order Services are routed and charged directly to Don Jones , the current cataloger for the Baudelaire Collection. The Item Type for Baudelaire materials should be BOOK- (Baudelaire materials do not circulate). The LOCATION should be BAUDELAIRE . When cataloging Baudelaire materials, a special note is added to the LOCAL bibliographic record in the 500 field:

500 W.T. Bandy Center for Baudelaire and Modern French Studies.

Other special LOCAL NOTES might include:

500 Library's copy signed by the author.
500 Library's copy inscribed by the author.
500 Limited edition of 100 copies printed.
500 Library has nos. 15, 22 (copy 2).

Sometimes a book ordered for the Baudelaire Collection may just have a small amount of information about Baudelaire in the item. This should still be indicated somehow in the bibliographic record when cataloging the item. Sometimes a part or chapter of a book or serial (perhaps an “In-Analytic” record) should be cataloged in order to bring out the most specific information concerning Baudelaire in the item.

When the cataloging of a Baudelaire item is completed, a printout of the bibliographic record is placed in the book with the LC call number circled. Baudelaire Collection items are NOT sent to Marking and are NOT given spine labels. Barcodes should be attached to the printout, NOT to the item. The cataloged item and printout are then given to Yvonne Boyer , the librarian who supervises the Baudelaire Center .
