Cataloging Worktools and Locations/Item Types
Differences between locations CATALOGING and CAT-WKTL and STAFF-OFFC:
For the most part, if we have ordered a worktool for our use, the item type should be WORKTOOL and the location STAF-OFFC.
Nancy has set up a corresponding holdings code for us to use: RS-CAT. If Order Services needs to note that the particular staff office to send the material to is Cataloging, that should go in a 95x note.
The location CAT-WKTL has been used when the item type is something different than WORKTOOL. This location is used for most of our Government Depository items which have the location GOVT-INFO- but are located in the Cataloging workroom, such as all the LC classification schedules, tables, and other cataloging information published by the Government Printing Office. It has also been used when the item type has been PERIODICAL. It helps to identify the material as a worktool and place it in the Cataloging department.
There have been cases when CATALOGING has been used as the location instead of CAT-WKTL. CATALOGING used as a location is misleading. To the average user, it seems to imply that the material is in the process of being cataloged and not that it is in a place called Cataloging. We do NOT want to use this code for anything. The problem has been that CATALOGING was set up as a valid location because of a translation of the no longer used cend, rsdo holdings code. Nancy says that we cannot delete any holdings codes or their corresponding locations and item types once they have been set up. So we can't take CATALOGING out of the pull down menu, even though we
DO NOT USE this code.
Because it is in the pull down menu, the location CATALOGING continues to be used. Please make a mental note that this is not a valid location and use the code right above it called CAT-WKTL instead.
