Non-Rush Patron Requests

It is possible for bibliographers to place non-rush orders and have Circulation notify patrons. The procedure is described below. Bibliographers may place either an ordinary order or a PRIORITY order and have requesters notified. Remember in either case to check the "Notify requester when item is cataloged" box on the Purchase Request form. There is a particular flag that RS is using to distinguish these orders.

Bibliographers may, of course, still place rush orders and have patrons notified, but using this alternative when possible may reduce the number of rushes moving through the system.

Patron Request/ Do Not Bind

The purpose of this procedure is to create a category of materials for those titles requested by patrons, but not requiring RUSH processing through Resource Services.

Purchase Request: When purchase requests are submitted to Order Services, patrons have the option of requesting to be notified when material is cataloged. To do this, they should mark the box "Notify requester when item is cataloged".

Ordering: For the above patron requests, an asterisk (*) is entered beside the bibliographer's name in the 952 of the bib record by the verifier. When the order record is created, the requester's name is entered in the order record in the Comments field in the orderline.

Receiving: Upon receipt of the material, the receiver will print a copy of the order record, highlighting the requester's name, and insert it into the book. The receiver will also flag the book with the "PATRON REQUEST - DO NOT BIND" flag. The book will be routed as appropriate.

Cataloging: the book will be cataloged as PRIORITY - that is, not RUSH, but not sent to the Annex.
Marking: the book will be marked as usual, and NOT sent to the bindery.

Circulation: Circulation will use the printout to notify the requester, and return the flag to Order Services.
