Responses to Search Interface
Webcat/ACORN Library Catalog
This summary is based on three reviews, two of which focused on Webcat/ACORN. There a few common comments, and a selection of individual comments.
General trends in evaluations of Webcat
- Generally, pleasant appearance and clear movement from screen to screen.
- Print commands are confusing, particularly the need to select the Download button before using Netscape print command.
Appearance of Interface
Positive comments:
- The colors are pleasant, especially the buttons against the light background (in contrast to the gray-on-gray of WebSPIRS).
Additional individual comments:
One reviewer noted the hidden Submit Query button on Advanced Keyword search screens.
Navigation
Individual comments:
- The need to click twice to return to the search option screen is excessive; one click should be enough.
- Purpose of HOME and EXIT buttons is not clear and requires explanation.
- Often, it is necessary to take several steps to navigate to another point within Webcat; this seems excessive and can inconvenience users.
- One reviewer commented that navigation works well, if the user combines use of Netscape and SIRSI buttons.
Search Engine
Individual comments:
- "OR -- this ridiculous definition of an extremely important search tool makes this interface almost(?) a sham."
- One reviewer complained of the need to click a button to launch a Keyword search, whereas hitting the Enter key is sufficient to begin other types of searches.
- Short of using the Netscape Back button, there should be a way to return to the previous search, i.e., to locate and correct typos or other errors.
- One reviewer especially liked the "powerful Advanced Keyword" search option.
- Where there is no exact match in a Term search, one reviewer complained of the next record (alphabetically) appearing at the top of the browse list, rather than the closest matches appearing in the middle of such a list.
- One reviewer complained that it is necessary for users to place the cursor in the search box each time.
Display and Capture of Results
Critical comments:
- Two reviewers criticized the need to click on the blue number from the index screens; many users find it confusing, and some find it difficult to click on the numbers.
- Print sequence is too long and confusing, particularly the need to click on the Download icon, which stumps many users.
Individual comments:
- Information at the top of a screen displaying a record is insufficient; it is often necessary to scroll down to the bottom of the screen to know where an item is actually located.
- One reviewer commented that the e-mail function for capturing search results worked well.
