COMPUTER SYSTEMS ADMINISTRATOR II / SYSTEMS LIBRARIAN, LIBRARY INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SERVICES, 40 HPW

DESCRIPTION: Provides technology and computer support for the Vanderbilt Library While working in an exciting and dynamic team environment. This position's major areas of responsibilities include working with the library's integrated library system (Unicorn), providing system administration support for the library systems, serving on system-wide library committees, and assisting in developing and enhancing current library services. The successful candidate will be user-oriented and be able to work with people of various technical abilities. Other duties and assignments will be negotiated based on the successful candidate's expertise, team needs and library priorities.
QUALIFICATIONS: Required: Bachelor's degree plus two years experience providing technology support; excellent communications and organizational skills; ability to multi-task between several priority tasks; experience working in a higher education or library environment; working knowledge of Unix. Preferred: MLS (if appointed with MLS, position classification will be "Systems Librarian"); experience with SirsiDynix Unicorn; Unix System Administration experience; experience with PERL, PHP, ASP or other scripting languages; experience with object oriented databases (mysql, oracle, or postgresql).
ENVIRONMENT: Vanderbilt University consists of ten schools and colleges with an enrollment of over 11,000. The Jean & Alexander Heard Library System has a collection of over 3 million volumes in eight libraries and a staff of 207. The total operating budget is over $20 million, and the materials budget totals over $8 million. Vanderbilt is a member of the Association of Research Libraries and Solinet. The library is highly automated with an online system based on Sirsi software. Library Information Technology Services is a team-based unit. The team works collaboratively with the libraries to facilitate effective computing and provide leadership in the design, development, implementation and maintenance of technology services for library users.

DIRECTOR, WALKER MANAGEMENT LIBRARY, 40 HPW

DESCRIPTION: Vanderbilt University Library invites nominations and applications for the position of Director of the Walker Management Library. The successful candidate will work closely with the administration, faculty and students of the Owen Graduate School of Management and with the library staff to plan and develop library collections, services and facilities for the Owen community. S/he will also work closely with the directors of the other Vanderbilt libraries and a new University Librarian to plan library collections, services and facilities for the University for the future.

The Director leads the Walker Management Library through establishing a vision and setting and attaining strategic goals for the Library; s/he builds an effective team, working closely with eleven staff in designing and delivering services and collections in support of the programs of the Owen Graduate School of Management and for the University community in the areas of business and management. Specific areas of oversight include collection development, collection processing; reference, information, and instruction services, desk and circulation services; the fee-based Business Information Service; and other library operations. Areas of direct responsibility are those in support of the administrative needs of the library including budget, recruitment, supervision and staff development, public relations, and facilities planning. The Director works collaboratively with the other Library directors in the system in a libraries council that promotes responsive, high quality services across the library system as a whole to the entire University community. The Director reports to the Deputy University Librarian/Head of Public Services and serves as the primary liaison with the School of Management.

QUALIFICATIONS: An M.L.S. from an ALA-accredited institution is required; a degree or background in business or management is highly desirable. Professional experience in libraries, including supervisory responsibility, is required. Experience in an academic business library is highly desirable. The ability to communicate and work effectively with staff, faculty and administrators is essential. Experience with developing and managing budgets is highly desirable. The successful candidate will demonstrate knowledge of the educational and research needs of the academic business community; enthusiasm for developing a library for the future; experience in conceiving, planning and implementing programs and services, and will have a proven record of creative leadership, management skills, and participation in the profession.

The Jean & Alexander Heard Library system has a collection of over 3.3 million volumes in eight libraries and a staff of 248. Vanderbilt University is a member of the Association of Research Libraries and SOLINET. The Management Library supports the research and curriculum needs of the Owen Graduate School of Management, as well as providing access to business and management information for the wider Vanderbilt community. The Library is located in the Owen School building. Current enrollment in the Owen School M.B.A., Executive M.B.A., and Ph.D. programs is about 500 students, with approximately 50 full-time faculty. The Library has provided research services to area businesses and alumni through its Business Information Service, a fee-based service, since 1984. Resources include over 58,000 volumes, 980 current serial subscriptions, and numerous business and economics databases. The Library staff includes the director, four professional librarians and seven full-time support staff. The Director manages an annual operating budget of approximately $1.2 million. MEDIA COORDINATOR (LIBRARIAN), CENTRAL LIBRARY, 40 HPW

DESCRIPTION: Vanderbilt University Library is seeking a Media Coordinator for the Central Library. The most significant portion of the individual's responsibility is the management of the Central Library's collection of digital and multimedia materials; including the circulation and reserve services for a portion of these items (DVDs, digital media, microforms, and other resources). The Media Coordinator will also work closely with the Digital Collections Archivist, bibliographers, and other library staff--as well as media stakeholders elsewhere on campus--in establishing goals and priorities for identifying, collecting, promoting, and providing access to digital resources in support of instruction and research at Vanderbilt. The Media Coordinator will collaborate with these individuals in developing and advocating services and access to new media technologies for the Vanderbilt community.

Media Services in the Central Library is a part of the Government Information and Media Services (GIMS) department. The Media Coordinator reports to the Head of Government Information and Media Services and works effectively in a collaborative environment; providing support for the joint resources of the department. This librarian shares in providing reference service for media and government information resources (responding to patron inquiries in person, by phone, and by email); as well as sharing in the staffing of Central Library Reference services.

As an additional significant area of responsibility, the Media Coordinator will be directly involved in the development, maintenance, and improvement of the webpages of Central Library's website as a member of the Central Library Web Team. The Media Coordinator will help the library integrate emerging technologies into its Web-based services for the Vanderbilt community, in particular for Media Services.

QUALIFICATIONS: Required: An M.L.S. from an ALA-accredited program. Familiarity with digital media and other media formats; with a good understanding and some experience with new media technologies. Proficiency with at least one web authoring tool (such as Dreamweaver); an understanding of the principles of web design; and experience in creating web pages. A willingness to develop a good working knowledge of government information databases, websites, and other resources. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. A firm commitment to library public services in support of the academic needs of students and faculty. Preferred: Experience in providing reference service in an academic library. Current awareness of copyright laws and issues pertaining to media. An understanding of the application of Web 2.0 technologies. Experience in working with government publications in a depository setting.

ONE YEAR TERM REFERENCE LIBRARIAN, CENTRAL LIBRARY, 30-40 HPW

DESCRIPTION: The Central Library at Vanderbilt University, which provides collections and services to students and faculty in the arts, humanities, and social sciences, seeks an energetic professional to serve as Reference Librarian. The person selected will serve a one year term appointment and work between 30 and 40 hours per week (to be negotiated). The chief responsibilities of the position are to staff the library's reference desk for up to 20 hours per week, and to assist with editing and updating of the library's Web pages. Some evening and weekend work will be required. Additional duties may be assigned on the basis of need and candidate ability. The position reports to the Head of Reference.
QUALIFICATIONS: Required are a master's degree from an ALA-accredited graduate program or equivalent; excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work in a highly collaborative setting; a strong commitment to service; experience editing and maintaining web pages; and the ability to work effectively in a rapidly changing information environment. Preferred qualifications include successful recent working experience in an academic library, particularly in reference, and experience using Dreamweaver for Web editing. PRESERVATION TECHNICIAN, TECHNICAL SERVICES, 40 HPW
(Functional title: Book Repair Technician)

DESCRIPTION: The Book Repair Unit is part of the Technical Services Preservation Team and serves the entire Heard Library system. The individual in this position will manage the daily and long term planning of the book repair lab work flow, including coordinating projects from across the entire library system. The person will perform a wide range of book repair treatments to restore the physical condition of library materials, as well as provide independent preservation consultation and training for the library system. He/she will assist the preservation librarian on other consultations and training, plus train and oversee the work of other lab staff. Work Schedule: Monday through Friday from 8AM - 5PM.
QUALIFICATIONS: The minimum education and experience required is some college plus 2 years previous work experience. The well qualified candidate will possess in-depth knowledge of a wide range of book repair treatments and enclosure designs, can demonstrate good organizational and customer service skills, is able to do creative problem solving, is familiar with multiple computer applications, can work independently, is flexible and detail oriented, and is able to operate specialized equipment.
COMPENSATION: $10.49 per hour (minimum)
