Acorn Hardware Replacement Project
The existing Sun SparcCenter 2000 server used for Unicorn will be replaced with a new Sun UltraServer 5000. The new server will be equipped with 4 UltraSparc processors, 1GB of Memory and 50GB of disk storage. We anticipate a mid-August change-over for the production Acorn system. The SparcCenter 2000 server will be used for SiteSearch projects once the transition is complete. Implementation Schedule.
SiteSearch Implementation
SiteSearch will be used to create a number of information resources for the library. Projects Planned for Summer 1997 include creation of databases for Baudelaire, Sigaux, and ATLA Religion Indexes, access to ERL databases, access to FirstSearch Databases, and an Electronic Reserves pilot project. At some point the SiteSearch databases will be transferred from the Sparc UltraServer 1/140 to the Sun SparcCenter 2000 formery used for Unicorn.
Network Server Upgrades
A number of network servers will receive hardware upgrades, and all will have their software upgraded from Novell NetWare 3.11 to IntranetWare.

CD-ROM Network Improvements
A new set of CD-ROM network servers will be created to replace the ones currently in service. We currently rely an servers based on Logicraft's LanCD/FastCD software. The hardware that these servers are beginning to fail too frequently and better software alternatives are available. We will use Novell IntranetWare for the operating environment for the new CD-ROM servers. We will migrate the 9GB drives from the existing LanCD servers to the new servers. To use the new CD-ROM Servers, the public-access stations will need to be converted to Windows NT Workstation as their operating environment. Before conversion to Windows NT the CD-ROM Server for that area must be complete and each computer must have 32MB of memory installed. Public Access Station Conversions:
Workstation Upgrades
The library has purchased a total of 74 Zenith Z-Station GT-500 desktop computers that need to be installed. The distribution of these computers is described by this chart. These will replace existing 486-based systems. Many of these installations will require other shifts in staff computers. All existing computers will be upgraded to 32MB of memory. Current status.
Migration of Staff to Windows NT
Desktop computers used by library staff will be migrated from Windows 3.1 to Windows NT. This change will be necessary to support SIRSI's WorkFlows client for Unicorn, and other 32-bit Windows Applications. Windows NT will provide a much more stable operating environment, eliminating most of the workstation crashes that we experience under Windows 3.1. Prerequisites of this migration include upgrade of each of the library file servers to Novell IntranetWare 4.11, installation of 32MB of memory for each workstation and training on the Windows NT operating environment.
