Windows NT / IntranetWare Integration
In a network-based computing environment such as ours, an important
concern involves the interaction between the desktop computer's
operating system and the network. Issues include the relation between
user accounts on the NT Workstation and the IntranetWare servers and
how applications on network servers show up on the user's desktop.
Library staff often use multiple computers. It is important that each user's
software applications and data files be available no matter which computer
he or she uses. Windows NT, without additional software, does not provide
any easy means for each user's applications to follow them as they use other
computers. Novell provides a combination of utilities that make this feature possible.
- Novell Application Launcher.
This software from Novell allows selected
software applications to be automatically associated with each network user.
NAL presents these applications to the user in a window labeled:
"NetWare Delivered Applications". This window automatically
appears when the user logs into the network.
- Roaming NT Profiles. Without other software, NT stores all configuration and
customization details for each user on the local drive of the computer. In an
IntranetWare environment this information may be stored on the user's network account.
This allows preferences and customizations to follow the user as he or she uses
multiple computers.
