
Library Technology Team
Goals
To consult and advise the libraries on technology issues.
- Meet regularly with University Librarian, Directors and other bodies to discuss emerging
technologies, computing support, and other issues related to the various automated services we support.
- Continue to educate ourselves, through both formal and informal channels,
on existing and emerging technologies and their potential applications within the libraries.
To provide a robust, secure, fast and reliable networked computing
environment for library patrons and staff.
- Continue to provide and maintain data security through daily tape backup procedures.
- Investigate, design and implement RAID solution for LIBRARY1 file server.
- Convert GLB workstations to 10BaseT connections, once re-cabling of building is complete.
- Procure 100BaseT connections for file servers in GLB.
- Replace older 486 workstations with Pentium class workstations running
Windows NT Workstation 4.
- Maintain and refine NDS security to provide only authorized access to the network
and to protect data from unauthorized access.
- Work cooperatively with ACIS in identifying and addressing problems with
library network access to and performance across the campus backbone and internet connections.
- Insure Year 2000 compliance and/or plans to address non-compliance for all
critical hardware and software components of library networks.
- Upgrade storage and memory capacities for file servers and networked CD-ROM
servers as needed.
- Further integrate web technologies as a primary tool for staff work and communications.
Working in cooperation with the Staff Development Committee,
to provide appropriate and timely instruction for staff in application software.
- Help identify staff training needs.
- Coordinate training for library staff.
- Train staff in effective use of Windows NT Workstation 4.
- Train staff in SIRSI/ACORN functions.
To manage, maintain, support and secure ACORN.
- Communicate regularly with SIRSI corporation and library staff on new and
outstanding problems.
- Create new and maintain old policies in ACORN.
- Participate in CAG, ISAG, and RSIG to coordinate and review ACORN related
activities for all ACORN users.
- Review operating schedules and procedures regularly.
- Provide support for patron database maintenance.
- Implement Unicorn 98 when available.
To continue to enhance and refine our system to receive, track,
respond to, and communicate with end-users regarding requests for service of existing hardware,
software and network operations.
- Review and revise communications procedures for all problems reported through netfix.
- Describe position, search and hire additional technician.
- Work with libraries to develop local technology coordinators to enhance service delivery,
problem reporting and communications.
- Through informal and formal training opportunities, empower library staff to address
problems that are less technically complex.
- Pursue additional cross-training for existing LTT teams members to provide redundancy
in essential operations.
To provide means to integrate and support databases, electronic catalogs,
Internet/World Wide Web Services, CD-ROMs and other electronic resources as necessary.
- Provide for maintenance of Library Web-Server (www.library.vanderbilt.edu) hardware
and software.
- Implement search engine for web pages maintained on the server.
- Establish, test, and monitor URL links to Internet databases and services
- Coordinate placement and status with appropriate bibliographers
- Advise feasibility and applicability.
- To develop and expand applications of Sitesearch software
- Maintain support for the Baudelaire database
- Develop and add support for the ATLA religion database
- Maintain support for the Project Athena virtual catalog
- Develop and add support for the Project IRIS virtual catalog
- Develop and add support for the Sigaux document imaging project
- Develop and add support for the Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETD) project
- Plan to implement upgrade to Sitesearch version 4.0
- Integrate new and maintain existing networked and standalone
CD-ROM databases and resources.
- Perform and test new CDROM product installations as acquired
- Expeditiously perform CDROM database updates as received
- Explore developing database formats and advise as necessary

- Encouraging and initiating partnership opportunities and relationships with each of the
libraries to enhance communication and service.
- In cooperation with the staff development committee and individual libraries,
helping to provide the necessary tools and training for any staff member needing them,
- Working with users and through departmental liaison/coordinator agents to
enhance the technological environment.
- Demonstrating trust and encouraging library staff to participate in needs
determination related to their own work,
- Promoting open communication--both listening and sharing of information,
- Being respectful of individuals and promoting mutual respect among all staff,
