Projects and Initiatives:
Spring-Fall 2000
Infrastructure development
- Replace hardware on NetWare servers: Library7, Library2a, Library Public Web Server (migrate from Solaris/SparcServer 1000 to NetWare/PowerEdge), ERL server. Upgrade network operating system from Novell NetWare 4.11 to NetWare 5.1.
- Replace specified staff and public use computer workstations.
- Install new streaming media server in support of Voices of Vanderbilt and in preparation for the development of any future multimedia digital resources.
- Investigate options for higher performance networks for libraries, more efficient network use.
- Implement new version of Pegasus Mail system.
Digital Libraries Projects
- Investigate and develop expertise with digital libraries technologies such as the
XPAT package from the University of Michigan Digital Library
eXtension Service
(www.umdl.umich.edu/dlxs).
- Complete work on the electronic edition of Charles Baudelaire: Une Microhistoire by Dr. Raymond Poggenburg.
- Complete work on Voices of Vanderbilt. Digitize all tapes into .WAV format, transfer each to a CD-R disc, convert to RealMedia format, add links in database.
- Implement new versions of SiteSearch and update IRIS and Athena virtual catalogs.
SFX
- Implement the Ex Libris SFX reference linking solution and participate in beta test program.
Web Development
- Execute new Web page design when finalized by the Web Development Task Force.
- Implement database-driven access to electronic resources.
- Investigate and implement a personalized customizable interface for library users (MyLibrary).
- Implement EZProxy or equivalent for more automatic authentication of library
users for restricted databases and for improved resource use measurement.
Acorn
- Automate transfer of charges from Unicorn to Student Accounts.
- Develop options toward the phase-out of Book Fund Accounting System.
- Improve process for selecting records for authorities processing by Marcive.
- Implement automation of new Women's Center library.
- Complete migration from InfoVIEW to WorkFlows.
- Beta Test Unicorn 99.4, 2000, 2001.
- Implement new versions of Unicorn as available and appropriate.
- Continue to investigate options for integrating user access tasks with campus-wide authentication schemes (VUNetID or e-password).
- Implementation of EDI
