LITS---Unicorn 2002 Upgrade

What's New?

Unicorn 2002 includes numerous corrections and enhancements -- the most significant ones are listed below. In addition, some of the client-based highlights of particular interest to staff are also indicated. Many more changes are described in detail in the Unicorn 2002 Release Notes. Staff with additional questions are encouraged to contact Anne Martin in L.I.T.S.

UDC and SuDocs Class scheme:

UDC and SuDocs Class scheme:
In keeping with international standards for bibliographic classification, indexing, and retrieval, Unicorn 2002 will provide the ability to index and sort bibliographic records using the Universal Decimal Classification Scheme (UDC). Users will be able to create and load bibliographic records with the UDC classification scheme assigned, and easily search and browse these records using the new UDC sort rule. The UDC is an internationally recognized standard library classification scheme for all fields of knowledge, knowlege that would be found in a universal library. This multilingual classification system is a highly flexible and sophisticated tool for organizing bibliographic records representing all kinds of information, including multimedia and electronic information collections.

Also in Unicorn 2002, the U.S. Government Document Classification policy has been updated with the SUDOCS sort rule. The basis for this sort rule is that years sort before letters, and letters before numbers. The SuDoc Classification Scheme is used primarily by the U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO) for classifying government publications and documents.

  Acq wizards

  • Three new wizards for creating orders are on the acquisitions toolbar. Each new wizard is based on order type function, so a different wizard is used if you are creating a single type basic order, or if you are creating a dated type subscription order, or if you are creating a recurring type standing order
  • .For multi-library consortia in particular, a new order pattern feature that allows staff to create multiple orders according to the same library, copy, and fund pattern streamlines repetitious ordering practices.
  • Displaying and modifying orders is also much easier with the new wizards.

New Wizards for Requests, Transfer item, and Bound-With

Improvements have been made to several wizards which replicated tasks accomplished by commands in the InfoVIEW interface. These "command" wizards are now fully-functional WorkFlows wizards with improvements suggested by users.

All of the command wizards used in the Request module have been converted to WorkFlows wizards, which will be delivered on a new toolbar. In addition, the Bound-With and Transfer Item wizards have been converted to WorkFlows wizards, which allows them to have properties, helpers, and next steps. These new features will help catalogers complete these tasks more efficiently.

Other enhancements and corrections

New display helper for Item and User displays, in which data from all folders displays in one screen, and can be printed easily.

  • Graduate overdue fine structures added to the Circulation Rule policies.
  • Shortcut key mapping for Insert/Delete added
  • Added option for new, larger Workflows Wizard icons on toolbars
  • Correct User Profile information displayed and retained for copy and modify user
  • Slightly modified screen display as preparation for further enhancements in Unicorn 2003
