Library Technology staff upgraded the server hardware for the Library1 NetWare server. The Zenith Z-Server WL was replaced with a Dell PowerEdge 2300. This new server should offer significantly faster performance and capability than the older equipment. We performed the replacement on Friday Evening / Saturday morning (May 7/8). Though delivery of mail was suspended during the process, all queued mail was delivered once the new server was activated. All data and programs were successfully migrated to the new server.
The new server has two 400MHz Pentium III processors, 512MB of Memory, and 27GB of disk storage. It connects to the network through a 145MB/second ATM connection, which is the fastest type of connection available on the campus network.
We expect that library staff that use Library1 should see considerable performance in the applications they use that rely on this server. We would appreciate any comments from staff that see noticeable improvement, and especially from those that still experience slowness.
