1. (oc)
Use for originally cataloged records for new material, including records input
directly into Acorn and added to OCLC. This does not include retrospective conversion
or records input into OCLC from NUC copy. Note: It does not include any
record done as part of the PCC program.
2. (ai)
Use for records input from scratch into Acorn but not added to OCLC at all.
3. (rc)
Use for retrospective conversion of anything we had previously cataloged "manually,"
no matter what the source of cataloging copy (our own cards, NUC, OCLC, whatever).
Use even if the record is input directly into Acorn and not added to OCLC. Note:
If you are reconning an item and you enhance/upgrade/enrich/PCC-ize an OCLC
record, you should use "le," "me," or a "p" code
rather than "rc."
4. (le, lu, lm)
Use "l" in the first position if the copy you started out with
is of one of these types:

The code in the second position establishes what has been done to or with the copy.
Use "e" if any change has been made to an OCLC non-serial record (enhancing, enriching, upgrading), but NOT as part of the PCC program. This overrides the "u" and "m" codes. Also, use "le" or "me" rather than "rc" if you are reconning an item and you do an enhance/upgrade/enrich in the process.
Use "u" if no change is made to the copy other than these:
a change in series entry accomplished before the item comes to the cataloger
a change in captioning in a series field
taking out extraneous OCLC fields
Use "m" if any other change is made to the copy.
5. (me, mu, mm)
Use "m" in the first position if the copy you started
out with is of one of these types:
The code in the second position describes what has been done to or with the copy. The guidelines are the same as in section 3, above.
6. (ve)
Use when you enhance (on OCLC) a provisional vendor-supplied record (such as
those put in by Casalini, Harrassowitz, and Puvill) if you for all intents and
purposes are recreating the record from scratch. (In other words, there is no
LC call number, subject headings are missing or inadequate, name access points
must be checked and changed, etc.) Do NOT use this code when you revise such
an OCLC record locally but do not enhance on OCLC—use "mm" instead.
Whenever PCC work is involved in the cataloging of an item, use one of the
following codes.
Note: When you use an existing PCC record but do nothing to it on OCLC,
do not use one of these codes; use an "l" or an "m" code
as shown above.
1. (po)
Use when you create an original, full-level PCC record from scratch.
2. (pc)
Use when you create an original, core-level PCC record from scratch.
3. (pm)
Use when you upgrade a non-PCC member record on OCLC to a full-level PCC record.
4. (px)
Use when you upgrade a non-PCC member record on OCLC to a core-level PCC record.
5. (pu)
Use when you upgrade a core-level PCC record on OCLC to a full-level PCC record.
6. (pv)
Use when you upgrade a provisional vendor record (such as those from Casalini,
Harrassowitz and Puvill) to a full-level PCC record.
7. (pz)
Use when you upgrade a provisional vendor record to a core-level PCC record.
C. CONSER-RELATED NEW CATALOGING
Whenever you enhance/update a serial record on OCLC as part of the process of cataloging a new item (which we are allowed to do as a CONSER Enhance library), use one of these codes. Note: As CONSER Enhance members, we are supposed to keep statistics on how many CONSER records and how many non-CONSER serial records we enhance. These two codes, along with corresponding "r" codes, will help us do that.
1. (co)
Use when you create an original, full-level CONSER serial record on OCLC.
2. (ce)
Use when you enhance/update a CONSER serial record on OCLC.
3. (cm)
Use when you enhance/update a non-CONSER serial record on OCLC.
Note: These recataloging codes are combined with the initials and the recataloging date, and should go at the beginning of the first 951 field, like this: re;pw;052003; . They should precede any new-cataloging code which is already there.
A. NON-PCC-RELATED RECATALOGING
1. (rr)
Use when you revise a previously cataloged record on Acorn but do not change
any records on OCLC. Cleanup of typos on previously cataloged records, bib file
maintenance resulting from authority work, and other such minor local cleanups
do not require any code at all.
2. (re)
Use when you revise a record on Acorn and enhance/upgrade/enrich the corresponding
record on OCLC as well (other than through the PCC program or the CONSER program).
B. PCC-RELATED RECATALOGING
Note: Use one of these codes when you do PCC work on OCLC even though you are only recataloging an item we previously cataloged.
1. (rm)
Use when, in the course of recataloging a previously cataloged item, you upgrade
a non-PCC member record on OCLC to a full-level PCC record.
2. (rx)
Use when, in the course of recataloging a previously cataloged item, you upgrade
a non-PCC member record on OCLC to a core-level PCC record.
3. (ru)
Use when, in the course of recataloging a previously cataloged item, you upgrade
a core-level PCC record to a full-level PCC record.
C. CONSER-RELATED RECATALOGING
1. (rs)
Use when, in the course of recataloging a serial, you enhance a CONSER (including
LC) record on OCLC.
2. (rn)
Use when, in the course of recataloging a serial, you enhance a non-CONSER serial
record on OCLC.
