Unwanted or Defective Books Procedure for CAT

There are times when material is reviewed by the cataloger and found to be of questionable merit for the collection, for any number of reasons (e.g., we already have a better edition in the stacks, etc.). The cataloger consults with the bibliographer to decide if the library wants to discard the book. Once a decision to discard is made, follow these steps:

If the book is a firm order or was received on one of our approval plans:

If the book is a gift:

Annex duplicates

Books being rejected because they are duplicates of Annex material:

Explanation: The current Annex policy states that they will not accept duplicates. Order Services should return to Collections Development any gifts that are found to be duplicates of Annex material. Should CAT discover an unintentional duplication, the following steps should be taken. The book will NOT be added.

Defective books to be returned

If a book is found to be defective and we want to return it, follow the first procedure above (for books which have been purchased but rejected for the collection). The 952 note should state that the book is defective and you are sending it to OS so that they can attempt to return it.
