1/16/2002 RSIG Minutes

All members were present

Pink Cards: When RS eliminated the use of the pink cards to denote unbound serials that required Security Strips, some of the receiving libraries were confused by their absence. Some had depended on the presence of the cards to confirm that the Security Strips had been inserted in Marking. This led to several conversations with the libraries about their preferences for Security Stripping. All of the libraries save one have asked that Marking cease stripping their new unbound serials. Roberta will pursue with the remaining library to determine their needs and preferences. In the mean time, Marking will stop inserting the Security Strips in the new unbound serials of the remaining libraries.

Erotic Books: A reminder that books with erotic pictures are generally housed in Special Collections. As there was some confusion about the exact location, etc., Roberta will check with Juanita about the specifics of location, marking, etc.

Absence reporting: Roberta raised the issue of absences over the Holidays, and how we communicate absences to others within RS. She requested that, in the future, Team Leaders should compile a list of who will/will not be at work on Holidays and send to the RS Management Team. If an area is going to be unstaffed, that information should be communicated as well.

Verifiers sending serial added volumes to Cataloging: The issue of some serials being sent to Cataloging in error was raised. Mary Ellen has requested that any samples be sent to her so that the nature and scope of the problem may be determined. Zora will gather samples.

Innovation and Initiative: Roberta reminded everyone that, as many are off to ALA, ALA offers a good place to learn about and discuss innovations. The Strategic Planning Committee has discussed their desire for further initiatives on the part of Technical Services; Roberta will pursue this with the Committee.

Goals and Projects: As Team Leaders are presently working on their Goals and Projects for 2002/2003, Roberta would like to have TS Team Leaders work together on them. As each Team Leader completes their G&P, they are asked to send them to Roberta; we will work together to prioritize them. We also discussed the need to involve the Libraries in this process.

Work Flow Task Force Update: Roberta reported that the WFTF had met the previous Wednesday (Jan 9). The TF was joined by the Series Processing Task Force, and received their report and recommendations. Their report is under review by the various teams within TS. The WFTF will next meet with Preservation to discuss their current workload, as well as with the newly formed Materials Routing Task Force. (Meeting on Jan 24 at 9:00, Goldberg room)

Each Team Leader within the WFTF has completed the flow charts for major types of processing. There are a total of 28 flow charts so far. Roberta will be making a presentation at ALA on our approach to changing the work flow.

The upgrade and subsequent patch went well, though there are still some small problems that we are working on with Sirsi.
