RSIG MINUTES
12/15/99
PRESENT: Susan Bell, Nancy Boggess-Korekach, Zora Breeding, Sue Davis, Peg Earheart, Sylvia Martin, Monica Sanchez, Mary Ellen Wilson
REPORTS: Susan asked if it would be possible for catalogers to run their own reports for their inventory subjects items. There has not been a quarterly inventory report since last April. There was some concern about whether or not bibliographers would "be left out of the loop" if catalogers run their own reports. Nancy said that she thinks some bibliographers are currently running their own reports. There seems to be no problem with catalogers running reports. Suellen Stringer-Hye will be teaching a class on running reports that catalogers should take. ACTION: Sylvia will talk with John Haar to see if bibliographers would have any problem with reports not coming directly to them. She will also check to see if any bibliographers are already running their own inventory lists.
OFFLINE RETURN: Sylvia reported that bill Hook was the only person who responded to her message about offline return. He questions why an item requested by ILL from the inventory needs to be cataloged before circulating. He suggests a review as to whether or not an item really needs to be cataloged upon return from use rather than rush cataloging before use. No one objected to lending without cataloging. The item would need to have an ownership stamp. Peg agreed that her staff could probably stamp the item when it is requested. There was some concern about how circulation staff would react to circulating uncataloged material. Peg suggested that this material be restricted to in-house use only. If this policy were adopted, Peg asked if it would include all Annex inventory or only IRIS/ATHENA material. ACTION: Sylvia will check with John Haar, Janet Thomason, and any other appropriate staff to present questions/concerns.
APPROVAL STUDY: Sylvia reported that she is close to finishing the approval evaluation report. She shared some figures on problematic shelf-ready material that Jeff Taylor had accumulated as these items were returned to him. These figures will be included in the report.
CAT PROJECTS: Zora noted that a student had finished working on the holding conversion project. However, there are still a few records that were overlooked. If staff come across a record without a call number in the holdings, they should notify RSCAT. The student will now be working with an old NOTIS list of INVD records to update them to LC whenever possible. He will retrieve items from the stacks for relabeling when LC copy is found.
NEXT MEETING: Wed., Jan. 12, Baker, 2:00
