RSIG MINUTES
2/2/00
PRESENT: Susan Bell, Nancy Boggess-Korekach, Zora Breeding, Sue Davis, Peg Earheart, Sylvia Martin, Monica Sanchez, Mary Ellen Wilson
APPROVAL EVALUATION: Sylvia summarized a meeting with John Haar, Sherre Harrington, Flo Wilson, Zora, Sue, and Mary Ellen where results of the comparative study on approval processing was discussed. Sherre and John will confer with their staff before making a final decision on how to proceed with shelf-ready material. Mar. 1 was the date set for a decision. There was discussion about an issue that arose during the meeting with Sherre and John. Sherre mentioned that current terminology used for some locations is not clear (e.g. BAKER HOLD, IN-PROCESS), and she wondered if more definitive terms could be used to indicate to patrons that a book is available although it is not yet on the shelf. The request function on the web would be a good solution, but a different term for IN-PROCESS would have to be used so that it would not interfere with BioMedical's use of that term. For use in Workflows, a hypertext box with a brief explanation of the term could be used. ACTION: RSIG members will think about a new term for IN-PROCESS for review at the next meeting. Sylvia will check the list of locations on the web, and ask specific RSIG members to define them for hypertext boxes. A request will then be sent to NETFIX to add these boxes.
CIRCULATION BEFORE CATALOGING: Sylvia read comments from Jim Toplon, indicating that he thought circulation before cataloging was a good idea for uncataloged items requested from the inventory. It would not cause problems for ILL. There was discussion about a pilot project to circulate without cataloging. It was suggested that, after circulation, a book could then be sent to Cataloging. Sending it to a specific location, e.g,. Cataloging, and bypassing Circulation would eliminate potential problems for Circulation. ACTION: Sylvia and Peg will talk to Janet Thomason to see if she is willing to experiment with circulation before cataloging. Sylvia will set up an appointment with Janet.
EDUCATION CUTBACKS: There will be no immediate impact for RS. However, if there is a major cancellation of Education serials/periodicals, it will mean additional work for OS.
ANNEX/AUTHORITIES: Zora noted that many reference sources used by Cataloging have been removed to the Annex. She asked if Peg's staff would be willing to fax needed information to Cataloging instead of Cats having to send for the entire volume. ACTION: Peg will ask her staff to comply with this request.
NEXT MEETING: Wed., 2/16, 2:00, Baker
