CIP Problem Example
Step 1: CIP Bib record and SAR are created by LC, based on what publisher tells them they plan to publish.
| Book in Planning Stages | CIP Bib Record | SAR |
|
t.p. Teaching literacy effectively in the primary school series: Language and literacy in action |
040: DLC |cDLC 245 00 Teaching literacy effectively in the primary school440 _0 Language and literacy in action |
130 _0 Language and literacy in action |
Step 2: Book is actually published:
t.p.: Teaching literacy effectively in the primary school
ser. t.p. : Language and literacy in action series
***Notice that the publisher changed the series title, so that the book as
published no longer matches the records!
Step 3: OCLC's CIP unit catalogs the book, filling in pagination, etc. but see what happens to the series!
| CIP Bib Record Updated by OCLC | SAR |
|
040: DLC |cDLC|dC#P 245 00 Teaching literacy effectively in the primary school.490 1_ Language and literacy in action series |
130 _0 Language and literacy in action |
Series descriptive field (4xx) may have been changed to match the book, and an 830 added to "force" a match with the authority record. What should happen is that the SAR and bib record should be changed. The catalogers can make these change and the record should be marked SA&. Note also that Language and literacy in action series is not a 4xx on the SAR, which is another clue that this book should be flagged as a problem.
Step 4: Record and SAR fixed by cataloger. Everything matches!
