HOW TO DETERMINE LC,CC,MC CODING FOR BOOKS

If the call number is 050 :
Find the Source (Srce) in the fixed field and check it against the chart below.

Check the Source (Srce) against this chart to see if the Encoding level, 040, and 042 information match :

Source

Encoding Level

040

lccopycat or lcac

If all checkpoints reading across the chart match, code as LC.
If any points don’t match, code as CC. These will receive a "meadow green" flag and be routed to LAIVs.

If call number is 090 :
Code MC and route to original catalogers.

Promptcat provisional records will have an 040 field, even though there is no member copy for them. The 040 will contain the following code:

040: OCL|cOCL

Code these as NC because there is technically no copy available for them.

The following codes are found on vendor's provisional records, prior to PromptCat overlay:

040: UkOxBHB|cUkOxBHB

040: OrLoB|cOrLoB

If you find these codes in the record while you are processing the book, the record has not been overlaid properly. If no other items on the invoice have been overlaid, this may indicate a problem with the PromptCat report and should be reported. If only one record has not been overlaid, the title should be re-searched via SmartPort and overlaid manually. GOBI records (from YBP) have no 040 prior to PromptCat overlay.

Any other variations and forms of cataloging should be coded MC and go to the original catalogers. If no copy is found, create a provisional record (see What to include in provisional records) and code as NC.

CODING FOR SERIALS: LC coding should be used only for 050:00s (send to Becky Atack).
All other serials should go to the appropriate serials cataloger.
