TECHNICAL SERVICES INTERNAL BINDING PROCEDURES

ICI-MAB Bindery picks up and delivers on alternate Tuesdays year round with holiday breaks in July, November (Thanksgiving) and December (Christmas).

WHAT WE DO AND HOW YOU CAN HELP

1. Send your periodicals, serials, and monographs to TSBinding a week prior to the shipment date. See Bindery shipment calendar. We use the lead time to prepare the items for shipping. Our general rule is first in, first out. If you send us items early, we can get a head start on your materials.

2. If your library is located inside the GLB, we appreciate your bringing your items to us on a book truck that you can leave with us. We do not always have spare trucks to which we can quickly offload and return your truck. 3. If you are planning to send an unusually large amount of materials for binding, please let Binding/Marking know as far in advance as possible.

4. If we are unable to process everything in time for the next outgoing shipment, we treat periodicals and serials as higher priority than monographs. If your priorities are different, please let us know. We want to provide quick turnaround for all your materials, but sometimes must choose.

5. Provide as much information as possible with the periodical and serial titles. Many titles are similar to each other. Supply the Title ID number and correct variable information required for the spine of each volume.

6. All periodicals and serials currently still require data input into LincPlus, the bindery software. LincPlus has made it possible to pull information from SIRSI for monographs and may do the same for periodicals and serials in the future. Currently for periodicals and serials, there is a title pattern already in the database and we only have to input the information for the current volume. If it is a new title, we create a new pattern, which is added permanently to the database. A title change takes the current pattern and edits it to the new title; therefore, keeping the same slots, call number and coloring of the previous title. If a periodical or serial title ceases or the title has been cancelled from the collection upon the binding of the last volume, please make a notation for the title to be purged from the binding database and the binding staff will purge it from the database. For monographs, all the records are input for one time only and the system does not retain that information after receipt back from the bindery.

7. Remember that ICI-MAB Bindery cannot guarantee that volumes more than 2" thick will stay bound properly. Try to collate your periodical and serial issues accordingly. You are also encouraged to consider how heavy a volume is before binding it. Sometimes glossy paper makes a volume too heavy to handle easily and should be made into two volumes rather than one even if its thickness only measures 2".

8. Any time you have a question about binding, please give Binding/Marking staff a call or send an email.
