Unbound Central serial titles come to Binding/Marking for either binding or labeling. Binding decisions are made on a title-by-title basis by Central. This procedure applies to non-RUSH items only; RUSH items should not routinely be bound upon receipt.
Preliminary Work
As titles which should be bound upon receipt are recognized, either in Binding/Marking or in Central, Machelle will place a note in the Acorn record for that title. The note will say BIND UPON RECEIPT.
Processing Steps
(After BIND UPON RECEIPT titles have been recognized and notes added to Acorn.)
A. Order Services receives and sends piece to Machelle with a BIND UPON RECEIPT flag inside the item..
B. Ann sorts unbound serials by the Bind Upon Receipt flag in Central pieces and others. She will give the ones with the BUR flags to Machelle and will take the others for labeling that day and subequent forwarding to Central.
C. BUR flagged serials are sent to the bindery, and are processed and forwarded to Central Circulation upon their return from the bindery.
New Central Serial Titles and Title Changes:
A. Order Services will clip three barcodes inside each volume and charge it to the appropriate cataloger.
B. The title is processed on a priority basis in Cataloging. When the cataloger has finished, the volume will be placed on a shelf in Binding set aside expressly for these materials. The cataloger will send information to Order Services to create the check-in record.
C. Machelle will review the items, charge them to Marking and give them to Ann for unbound serial labeling. Exceptions will be those items that need immediate binding because of physical condition problems.
