Labeling Rush Material

Rush labeling is done three times day at 9:00am, 12:00 noon and 3:00pm.

Patron requests received in TS RUSH group mailboxes (RUSHACQ, RUSHCAT, RUSHMARK, RUSHBIND, RUSHREPAIR) are processed and delivered as quickly as possible, including delivery by hand to branch libraries as well as Central and Divinity. Other RUSH items are generally hand delivered only to Central and Divinity and shipped to the other libraries. The entire Technical Services PATRON RUSH REQUEST procedure is spelled out in detail in Requests submitted to TS Rush Mailboxes. An overview of the Preservation Team portion of the procedure is listed below.

Processing Steps:

1. Do the inside physical processing work to the RUSH item as you would to a regular marking item (property stamp, security strip, date due slip).

2. Go into the web-based spine label utility and run a label for the item.

3. Cut and attach label to item.

4. Record how many rush items you labeled.

5. After labeling, immediately discharge the item.

6. If the RUSH request has come to a Pres team mailbox (RUSHBIND, RUSHMARK, or RUSHREPAIR), the person checking the mailbox should reply by email to the patron and copy the appropriate circulation desk with an estimated time when the item will be ready. On the enclosed printout of the patron request, write down the estimated time of arrival. Insert a Hand Deliver flag in the item if necessary.

Delivery Method

7a. PATRON REQUEST TO TS MAILBOX (RUSHACQ, RUSHCAT, RUSHMARK, RUSHBIND, RUSHREPAIR): If the item is for Central or Divinity, discharge immediately and deliver directly to Yolanda's desk at CenCirc. or the Div. circulation desk. For any other library, discharge to IN TRANSIT, check for a Hand Deliver flag and note when the item is expected at which library circulation desk. If there is a Hand Deliver flag, give the item to Karen to send a message to the Catologer walker volunteers (Distribution list nickname: WALKERS) that there is an item waiting to be hand delivered. Catalogers will respond quickly if they can walk the item directly to the Circulation Desk of the appropriate library. If the Catalogers are unable to deliver the item in a timely way, or if the item is for Music Library, package the item for the messenger, mark package RUSH/PATRON REQUEST, initial and date.

7b. OTHER RUSH REQUESTS: If for Central Library, deliver directly to Yolanda's desk; if for Divinity, deliver promptly as well. If for other libraries, immediately pack in a separate padded envelope (for each library) and label the outside with the library, date, and the word RUSH. If the quantity is too large for padded envelopes, please clearly mark a separate tub with the same information.
