The Technical Services book repair lab offers a new service for library staff
who have large format posters/signs/sheets to cut or trim for library projects,
and which cannot be done on departmental table-top paper cutters. The book repair
lab can also cut open paperback books with uncut leaves.
A large cutting machine aptly named the guillotine can cut open uncut paperback publications up to 2" thick, depending upon the type of paper. A large Vaggelli board shears/cutter can accommodate paper sheets or lightweight cardboard up to 40" long. This equipment is not designed to handle heavy, dense cardboard, foam board, or thick plastics. Nor is it appropriate for small paper items that can more easily be trimmed on table-top paper cutters.
Because of training and safety concerns, repair lab staff themselves will do the cutting and trimming work. We ask that these cutting projects be scheduled in advance, preferably a week ahead, so that we can fit the special project into the regular workflow. We will usually be able accommodate small walk-in jobs, such as cutting open a single book, on a more immediate basis.
Please call or email Sue Davis or Charlotte Lew to schedule your project.
