Procedure for Patron Request
materials sent to Libraries uncataloged.
At the discretion of OS or Cataloging, materials that have been requested
by a patron may be sent to the library uncataloged.
Factors to consider are:
Can the material
circulate? Only circulating
material is eligible for this routine.
Given the day
of the week/time of day/next scheduled Messenger run, would cataloging and
marking the material add to the delivery time to the patron?
So that these materials may circulate immediately and then re-enter the
correct workflow upon return, the following instructions should be applied
to these materials:
If the decision has been made to
send the material to Circulation uncataloged:
Order Services:
-
Attach
barcodes to the book, and add barcode number to the Acorn record.
- Add 952 to the bibliographic record:
- Patron Request: sent to (Library)
uncataloged (date) (your initials)
- Stamp with ownership stamp on
back of title page, centered near the bottom of the page, taking care not
to stamp over printing.
- Initial and date a Patron Request
Streamer, then wrap it around the front cover of the book. Take care to tape
the streamer tightly to itself, and not to the book.
- Insert patron information (printout
of order, Rush Request e-mail, etc.), with patron's name highlighted.
- Charge to appropriate "TS
Messenger to (Library)" pseudopatron, and route to Library. Mark
package RUSH/PATRON REQUEST, initial and date.
Cataloging:
-
If necessary,
attach barcodes to the book.
- Add 952 to the bibliographic
record:
- Patron Request: sent to
(Library) uncataloged (date) (your initials)
- Stamp with ownership stamp.
- Initial and date a Patron Request
Streamer, then wrap it around the front cover of the book. Take care to
tape the streamer tightly to itself, and not to the book.
- Insert patron information (printout
of order, Rush Request e-mail, etc.), with patron's name highlighted.
- If for Central, discharge the
book and deliver to Central Circulation. For any other library, discharge
and route to Library. Mark package RUSH/PATRON REQUEST, initial and date.
Marking:
If
the Patron Request is received when the material is in Marking, the book should
be marked immediately. If the material is for Central or Divinity, it should
then be discharged and delivered directly to their circulation desk. For any
other library, simply discharge and route to the Library. Mark package RUSH/PATRON
REQUEST, initial and date.
Binding:
If the Patron Request is received
when the material is at the Bindery, Binding staff will route the book when
it is returned from the bindery.
Upon receipt by the circulation
desk, circulation staff will:
-
Notify the
patron.
-
Discharge the
book (Receive from In Transit).
-
Place a HOLD
on the book with instructions to route the book to the appropriate cataloging
department upon return (TS, Divinity or Music).
- Place HOLD using User ID
374123 (TS Cataloging)
-
Check the book
out to the patron.
- If the patron has not picked up
the book within 7 days, remove the HOLD and return to Cataloging to complete
processing.
When the material is returned
by the patron to Circulation:
Upon return to Circulation, the Patron
Request streamer will indicate that the material is to be routed to TS Cataloging.
In addition, when the book is discharged, the HOLD will alert Circulation staff
to route to TS Cataloging. Cataloging will process the book in the routine cataloging
stream.
