January 2000 Meetings Summary

Members of the Committee are: Lisa Terranova (Chair), Mary Beth Blalock, Gretchen Dodge, Gayle Grantham, Julie Loder, Dale Manning, Debra Quarles and Suellen Stringer-Hye

The Staff Development Coordinating Committee met twice in January. Meetings were held on January 4 and January 25.

Brown Bag schedule
- Paul Gherman will present "Open Archives Initiative" on January 12th.
- ALA Midwinter Review, January 27th- Larry Romans, Marshall Breeding, Zora Breeding, Sherre Harrington and Sylvia Martin gave short presentations for this ALA Brown Bag.
- Paige-Campbell Heart Institute Brown Bag- Lisa Ivy, nurse practitioner, will present heart health information on February 16th from 12-1 in the GLB classroom.

Information Alliance
Mary Beth Blalock announced the possible date for the Information Alliance spring meeting as May 4th. She will wait to see what kind of feedback she gets before a final date is set. An alternate date of May 10th was being considered. Suellen mentioned that May 10th was being considered as a possible date for the forum. Members felt that these events should not be held in the same week so that more people could attend both meetings. Mary Beth will keep everyone posted.
Library Forum

After much thoughtful discussion, the library forum topic has changed. The new topic will be the "future of our library" with panelist discussing issues such as collection development, electronic publishing, etc.
Merit Award Survey:
Lisa reported that the Merit Award Survey was included in the January 17th Library Newsletter. At this time, she had received 44 responses to the Merit Survey and is working on tallying the results. More responses are expected.
Training Opportunities

Suellen announced that the training calendar posted this month would reflect the reduced class offerings. There is a concern that some staff may not be participating in classes that they could benefit from and might need encouragement from supervisors so they will attend appropriate classes. If demand increases, LTT will return to offering certain classes more frequently. Lisa announced that she did have the opportunity to clarify for the LMC the reasons for the decrease in class offerings.
Suellen also announced that Kim Battles from Sirsi would be here on February 24th-26th to work with the Sirsi Circulation Task Force. The library wide change over to Workflows will be postponed until summer due to the fact that the acquisitions module is still not ready.
Suellen reported that training for using Internet Explorer will be offered, as LTT prefers that IE be used as staffs' primary web browser. These sessions will be about 20 minutes long but the room will be booked for an hour in case participants have many questions.
Lisa reminded the committee that the next supervisor training session would be held on January 20th.
Lisa brought up the topic of outside training opportunities and questioned if we needed to post them. It was decided that these should be posted and Suellen suggested that they be sent to Judy Carter to post on the web. Some outside source training calendars are available on the web, so we would simply need to add a hotlink to them.

Upcoming Meetings
It was decided that in the future, this committee could meet every other week. Therefore, the next meeting will be February 8th. Also pertaining to future meetings is the need to consider new candidates to the committee, as some current members will be rolling off.
