- DATABASE
- Information organized in such a way that it may be
retrieved, usually by computer search.
- DAY USE CARD
- Card that can be purchased to gain access to
libraries four times; valid for a period of a year.
- DDS
- Document Delivery Service (and ILL in the Biomedical
Library).
- DEPOSITORY
- Designation for a library which receives
publications of a government. In the U.S., there are state and
federal depositories. Vanderbilt University is a federal depository.
- DEWEY CLASSIFICATION
- A system of classifying or cataloging library materials prior
to 1970 whereby main classes or disciplines are designated by a three-digit
number and subdivisions are shown by numbers after a decimal point (See LC).
- DIGESTS
- Brief summaries of court opinions arranged by subject (Law
Library).
- DISCHARGING
- Process of cancelling a charge for a book that
is returned.
- DISCIPLINE
- A subject that is taught; a field of study.
- DIVINITY LIBRARY
- A division of the library system housed in
the General Library Building; supports the Divinity School and the Graduate
Department of Religion.
