- MAG STRIPE
- Magnetized stripe; a magnetized strip for use in
automated machines, on which data can be recorded. Used on VU library cards
to record patron ID information for access control.
- MANAGEMENT LIBRARY
- Walker Management Library of the Owen
School of Management; a division of the library system housing business or
management materials which supports the academic and teaching needs of the
Owen Graduate School of Management.
- MAP ROOM
- Collection of maps located in the Science and Engineering
Library including topographic, nautical, and geological series, as well as
a variety of special subject maps.
- MARC
- Machine Readable Cataloging; standards for storage and shared
use of descriptive bibliographic information; variations of the format are
used by LC, OCLC, and NOTIS.
- MEDIA
- Printed and audio-visual forms of communication and any
necessary equipment required to render them usable.
- MeSH
- Medical Subject Headings (Biomedical Library); the equivalent
of Library of Congress (LC) subject headings which are used to give subject access
to materials dealing with medicine.
- MESSENGER SERVICE
- A unit of the Office of the University
Librarian responsible for
the pickup and delivery of mail and library materials among libraries. This
includes handling U.S. mail, Federal Express and UPS shipments, as well as
bindery shipments.
- MICROFORM
- A microphotograph of the text of a publication or
manuscript. Examples of format types include microcard, microfiche, and
microfilm.
- MLA

- MLS
- Master's Degree in Library Science; also represented as MSLS and
MLIS.
- MODEM
- Equipment that translates digital signals from a computer into
analog form to be sent over telephone lines to another computer.
- MONITOR
- Video component of a computer terminal.
- MONOGRAPH
- A separate treatise on a single subject or class
of subjects, usually detailed in treatment but not extensive in scope.
- MOUSE
- A pointing device that is used to move a cursor on the computer
screen and make various operations such as typing, drawing, and selection
possible.
- MUSIC LIBRARY
- Anne Potter Wilson Music Library; a library division
housing printed and recorded music materials, located in the Blair School
of Music, Blakemore Avenue.
