SEARCH ENGINE
Huge databases which include URLs of millions of Web pages along with information about the content of these pages. A user's query is matched with pages dealing with the query terms. Examples: Yahoo!, Excite, Alta Vista, Lycos.
SELA
Southeastern Library Association.
SERIAL
A publication issued in successive parts with number or chronological designations intended to continue indefinitely and appear with regular or irregular frequency. Serials include periodicals, newspapers, annuals, journals, memoirs, proceedings, etc.
SERIES
Separate and successive publications, usually on a given subject, issued in a uniform format by the same publisher.
SERMLP
Southeastern Regional Medical Library Program.
SESSION LAWS
Laws arranged in order of passage (Law Library).
SHELF LIST
A file consisting of one entry of each item cataloged in the library system arranged in call number order.
SHEPARDS
Publications used to determine which court opinions mention an earlier opinion (Law Library).
SIGAUX

SIRSI
The vendor that produces and supports ACORN, the libraries' online catalog. Headquartered in Huntsville, Alabama.
SITESEARCH
Collection of tools from OCLC that the library uses for creating electronic resources. Examples of library projects using SiteSearch software are IRIS and Athena.
SLA
Special Libraries Association.
SO
Standing order; all successive volumes of a work have been ordered to be supplied automatically when published.
SOFTWARE
Computer software; programs or instructions that tell the computer what to do.
SOLINET
Southeastern Library Network; regional library consortium.
SPECIAL COLLECTIONS
A department of the library system housed in the General Library Building containing rare books, manuscripts, the Wills Collection of Fugitive/Agrarian materials, the Vanderbilt University Archives, and the Vanderbilt Photo Archives.
SPREADSHEET
An application program in which the information is stored in a grid. Typically used for budgeting and statistics. Examples: Excel, Lotus 123.
STACKS
The space equipped for the storage of books and other library materials.
STAFF DEVELOPMENT COORDINATING COMMITTEE

SUBJECT HEADING
A word or term assigned by catalogers to provide access to records based on their subject matter. LC and MeSH are the two most common types.
SUDOCS
Superintendent of Documents; classification used for many government documents.
